Comb. effort on OSP and Sakai

Max (maxtsai@maxtsai.com),

Our next release of OSP should be on Sakai 2.1 plus some additional
features that we will be adding during the next few months. The
scheduled release for this should be sometime next spring.
The osp site (http://www.osportfolio.org/) should have a high level timeline.

You don't want to miss Kuali ..

"The Kuali Project creates software that provides a comprehensive suite of functionality to serve the financial systems needs of all Carnegie Class institutions. It includes such functional elements as Flexible Chart of Accounts, General Ledger, General Accounting, Accounts Receivable, Capital Asset Management, Pre and Post-Award Administration, Purchasing, Accounts Payable, Cash Receipting and Disbursement, Travel Requisition and Reimbursement, Auxiliary Accounting, Web-based e-Commerce, Budget Construction and Administration. The design is an enhancement of the proven functionality of Indiana University’s Financial Information System. A critical element of the system is the XML-based OneStart© workflow for routing and approval of financial transactions. Extensive data warehousing and decision support tools will be an integral part of the system.' from Kuali at http://kualiproject.org/

Sakai or Moodle / Part 1?

I often look into Moodle vs. Bb or Sakai vs. Bb in terms of Moodle vs. Sakai. So now, how about Moodle vs. Sakai?

I think Moodle does have the fresh look with the non-Blackboardish design, but, interesting enough, while the Course Menu Block to enable Moodle in structured format gets more popular, does that mean "Bb like" is what people want? Personally, I really think Sakai is more WebCT'an than Bb'ish.

A big question is whether Moodle or Sakai can provide the capacity of Bb for the Universities and providing Enterprise level integration with the campus Student Information System and Library System? Also, how about vendor support? Is it easier for current Bb Building Block (J2EE) vendors to support Sakai (J2EE) or Moodle (PHP)? Moreover, how about the Content System and ePortfolio support? Bb has spent a lot of effort on rolling out the Bb Content System and Sakai has built in WebDAV based content system and is in the process of combining the development effort of OSP and Sakai.

more to come ..
